About New Slang

New Slang is The Shins's first proper single, which was released in 2001 and appeared in the album Oh! Inverted World in the same year. The song had received little attention from public until it appeared in the 2004 film Garden State, described by the character Sam (played by Natalie Portman) as "life changing". The song also appeared in a McDonalds commeral and one of the episodes of TV series Scrubs, and is still being used quite frequently. It is known to be the band's most popular song due to the many appearences mentioned above.

Although I do not agree with Sam (the character) that the song is life-changing, New Slang has always managed to make my day better. It is so relaxing and casual, making it perfect for my earphones when I talk a walk around town. The lyrics, like other songs of the band, is very strange. "Dance like the King of the eyesore" for example, but it gives a very personal feeling that one does not care if he makes sense or dances well in front of someone he connects to. The vocal is also perfect that it always tempt you to sing along. When I was at a gig of the Shins in March 2007, everyone was singing along when they played New Slang. It was one of the best moments of my life. :D
